On the remote plains an hour north of Yangon, you’ll unexpectedly find hundreds of bouncy, barking, affectionate dogs vying for your love and affection. All former street dogs, it is understandable that some are very shy and others recovering from the stresses of their previous lives, but all are delightful characters who have been given a second chance thanks to the Yangon Animal Shelter (YAS).

Like its Asian neighbours, Myanmar is facing a crisis when it comes to stray dogs. The situation is often picked up on by our clients when they visit, and as Myanmar becomes a more popular destination for business and leisure travel, the organised poisoning of dogs has become common.

Feeling the need to do something, Terryl Just, an incredibly committed teacher based in Yangon, and a handful of passionate individuals managed to acquire space from a generous landowner and established the Shelter in 2012. It is the only organisation dedicated to the rescue and care of street dogs in the country and a ground-breaking concept here.

The Shelter’s aim is to spay, neuter and vaccinate the dogs in their care and eventually find them homes. They are totally reliant on donations and although some vets from Yangon have kindly donated their time and supplies to make regular visits to the centre, there is still a lot of work to be done.

Despite being built for 40 dogs YAS currently have around 500, hence they are embarking on an ambitious plan to improve their facilities. They are hoping to build separate areas for dogs with different needs, improve their conditions by providing additional shade and make the visitor experience more comfortable with a car park, meeting area and walkways. The works are expected cost around USD 45000.

The Shelter is also in constant need of dog food, bowls, toys, vitamins, collars, blankets and other supplies. All dogs have names, as well as their own personalities, and can be adopted. YAS are able to suggest dogs they feel will be a good match for you and help with the necessary documentation for overseas travel.
